Basic Requirements to Becoming a Police Officer

Being a police officer is not easy. There are a lot of responsibilities and work at hand. It is therefore important that one is equipped with the right skills and knowledge when applying to become a police officer. Like many other jobs, a degree in high school or college is a basic requirement. There are some states that only require a diploma in high school while some require a bachelor, associate or vocational degree to get into police academy. The reason why further studies may be required is because there are tasks that are complex and may require specific skills. For example, if one wants to be a police officer and be assigned in specialized areas, having a degree in high school may not be enough to equip one with the necessary skills and knowledge. But, if one is in the position and do further studies, getting promoted or being assigned in special area is not far from happening. Passing the civil service exam is also a requirement for one to enter the academy for training in law enforcement. Without passing the exam, one will not be able to go further with the training. This is basic examination and may be easy. Any citizen can apply for this exam and passing such will not only allow one to enter police academy but also join government offices as well.

Aside from education, another basic requirement is strength and agility. A police officer must be fit and healthy because their job can always include everyday action. If one is not capable of withstanding stress and exhaustion, this may not be the right job. Being a police officer will make one travel and be assigned in the field. More often, police are found patrolling outside or checking and watching over an establishment or location because it is their primary role. Police officers are expected to maintain safety and order in communities and elsewhere. Physical trainings are done by applicants and if they pass, they graduate and become officers. Skills training include emergency response, proper gun handling, and basic medical training for emergency response plus a lot more. Police officer applicants are also taught on tactics and strategies in handling situations that need prompt response. In line with this, being a critical thinker is also a must because in emergencies, every second counts.

As is the case when in a career that deals with the general public (like bartenders, cops, and politicians), police officers are expected to have the right attitude. Most police officers chose such profession because they have the desire to help people and protect their communities. But, there may be some that want the job for their own advantage. Police academies provide exams for applicants and this include psychological exams. This help the authorities choose the right candidates. Being disciplined is a must as well as being fair. Police officers are given authority and they should exercise justice and discipline so they will not abuse their power. The famous quote, “with great power comes great responsibility” would be very useful for law enforcement officers and this is very applicable with their job responsibilities.
